The project ‘Music Notation’ is a visual exploration of physical sound waves.
I have always been interested in the relationship between sound and music, and how this visually can be translated. The inspiration for the project came from cymatic experiments, in which metal plates with sand on top are vibrated at a constant frequency. This process moves the sand to form unique patterns and shapes.
I decided to conduct my own experiment using my electric piano and amplifier as the source of sound and vibration. By placing a sheet of paper and pouring salt on top, I then played each note of the C Major Scale, recorded the results and created a simplified version of each note and pattern.
The experiment resulted in a series of images which created a new visual language and should alter the way in which we perceive sound.
